Description: We invent a process to spray the functional biochar-silver nanocomposite onto the existing filter layer as an insert for a washable filter mask. The product called AgC-Tive. Biochar derived from rice straw, whereas silver nanoparticles will be functionalized amphiphilic. This structure will stabilize it and enhance functionality towards anti-viral and anti-bacterial. This product is a collaborative work between university-industry (Kasih Kirana Resources Sdn Bhd) to fulfill demand of functional washable facial mask and mitigate issues on COVID-19.
Based on customer inputs and requirements, there are niche market segments require for a washable face mask with an enhanced feature of filter layers (inserted inside the face mask), which require dust/particles to absorbed and germs to be killed. At the moment, we imported the filter layer with black carbon features from China. However, due to the recent pandemic of COVID-19, which restricted the supply chain and high customer demand currently for a washable face mask with 3-ply/2-ply filter inserts, the company believes in embarking into developing in house technology for this niche market. This will result in added value to our product and will boost the revenue of the company. Our limitation is the know-how of the process to develop the process and equipment to fabricate the filter layers in the house. Thus, we require a solution to manufacture technology that is green and efficient for the above purpose. In this project, UiTM will assist the company in developing technology to manufacture the filter layer that will be inserted into their existing washable face mask product. The filter layer will be incorporated with an enhanced feature that enables to not only filter dust/particles but also adsorbs and kills germ with using green technology biochar-silver nanoparticle composites that will e sprayed onto the surface of the filter layers.
