Ice detection/protection and flow control system based on dielectric barrier discharge sliding plasma actuators

Description: A smart, energy-efficient system using plasma actuators to detect, prevent, and remove ice on aircraft surfaces. It also improves airflow, adapts in real time, and works on flat or curved surfaces using printed circuit technology.

This innovation uses advanced plasma actuators made of ultra-thin, flexible layers to protect aircraft and other critical surfaces from ice. It features three smart electrodes: one for generating plasma wind, another for heat delivery, and a third for sensing. These components detect ice in real-time and automatically switch between detection, anti-ice, and defrost modes. Powered by AC, DC, and nanosecond-pulse voltage sources, the system forms a sheet of ionized air (non-thermal plasma) that heats the surface and controls airflow. It’s non-invasive, fast-acting, and energy efficient—perfect for wings, turbine inlets, and rotor blades. Manufactured using circuit printing technology, the system is cost-effective, customizable, and easy to apply on flat or curved surfaces. The result: safer, more efficient, and smarter aviation systems.
